Digestate, a valuable product of anaerobic digestion in biogas plants, is an excellent organic-mineral fertilizer that can significantly enhance soil health and crop productivity. However, its usage among farmers in Slovakia remains underutilized, the same as the missing market in Europe.
So how to promote digestate usage between farmers in agriculture and contribute to a sustainable farming environment?
Few tips to remember when talking to the Farmers,...:
1. 🤓 Educate Farmers on Benefits: Farmers need to understand the tangible benefits of using digestate. These include improved soil fertility, enhanced crop yields, and reduced dependency on chemical fertilizers. Digestate also contains essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are vital for plant growth and can be mixed with other types of organic fertilizers like compost to enhance the ability of soil carbon sequestration.
2. 🌻 Demonstrate Practical Applications: Conducting field demonstrations can show farmers the practical benefits and application methods of digestate. Seeing positive results firsthand can significantly influence their decision to adopt this organic fertilizer.
3. 🖐️ Inform about Financial Incentives: Financial incentives such as subsidies, grants, or reduced rates for digestate can encourage farmers to try it. Governments and agricultural organizations can play a key role in providing these incentives.
4. 👍 Collaborate with Agricultural cooperatives or farmers' Associations.: Working with agricultural cooperatives and larger organizations focused on farming can help in bulk purchasing, shared knowledge, and collective use of digestate. Cooperatives can also organize workshops and training sessions for their members.
...when talking to the Public,...:
5.🌺 Highlight Environmental Benefits: Promoting the environmental benefits of digestate, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and improving water retention in soils, can appeal to environmentally-conscious farmers.
6. 🤥 Address Concerns and Misconceptions: Addressing common concerns and misconceptions about digestate, such as odor issues, application methods, and potential contaminants, through educational campaigns and expert consultations can alleviate farmers' apprehensions.
7. 🙂 Talk to the other producers of Organic Fertilizers:
... and when talking to the Government.:
8. 😎 Contact all the relevant Ministries and Institutions: To effectively promote the usage of digestate from biogas plants in agriculture, collaboration with ministries and institutions can play a crucial role in creating or joining working groups, help develop policy frameworks and incentives or conducting research on the potential of the digestate usage.
9. 🤩 Show the Best Practices from Abroad: These examples can inspire confidence and demonstrate the practical benefits and adaptability of digestate, encouraging the government to adopt a similar path. Moreover, learning from international experiences can introduce innovative techniques and technologies that enhance digestate application also for farmers.
10. ❤️ Ensure Quality and Standardization: Ensuring the consistent quality and standardization of digestate by national agricultural institutions can build farmers' trust. Setting up certification processes and quality control measures can assure farmers of its safety and efficacy.

State of the Digestate Market in Greece
In Greece, the use of digestate is still emerging. While digestate is increasingly recognized for its potential as a fertilizer, the market is underdeveloped compared to other European countries. There is a growing interest in utilizing organic waste for biogas production and the subsequent use of digestate in agriculture, but challenges such as regulatory frameworks, market acceptance, and logistical issues remain.
Treatment of Digestate in Greece
In Greece, digestate is treated as both waste and fertilizer, depending on its quality and the regulatory framework applied. The Ministry of Environment and Energy, alongside other regulatory bodies, sets guidelines for the safe application of digestate in agriculture (MiniNational Strategy for Circular Economy/2018). The EU Fertilising Products Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 also influences Greek policy, promoting the use of organic fertilizers, including digestate, under stringent quality control measures.
Additional Ideas to Motivate Farmers to Use Digestate...
-
Enhanced Extension Services: Establish extension services specifically focused on digestate. These services can provide technical assistance, training, and ongoing support to farmers.
-
Research and Development: Promote R&D to improve the quality and application techniques of digestate. Collaborative projects between universities, research institutes, and agricultural enterprises can lead to innovative solutions that make digestate more appealing to farmers.
-
Creating Success Stories: Publicize case studies and success stories from local farmers who have benefited from using digestate. Highlighting tangible results in terms of yield improvement and cost savings can be persuasive.
-
Simplify Logistics: Develop efficient logistics for the distribution of digestate. Cooperative efforts to streamline the supply chain can reduce transportation costs and make digestate more accessible.
-
Regulatory Support: Advocate for clearer and more supportive regulations that promote the use of digestate. This includes simplifying the approval processes and providing clear guidelines for safe and effective application.
-
Partnerships with Agribusinesses: Engage with agribusinesses that supply seeds, equipment, and other agricultural inputs. These businesses can act as intermediaries to promote digestate alongside their products.
-
Sustainability Certifications: Develop certifications that recognize and reward farms for sustainable practices, including the use of digestate. These certifications can enhance marketability and consumer trust.
