Senior Innovation Manager Michael Støckler (MCS), Food and Bio Cluster Denmark.
MCS has dealt with planning, design, dimensioning, project planning and establishment of biogas production in various companies since 1988. MCS has participated in a number of biogas projects in Denmark, USA, Malaysia, Brazil etc.

Country profile: Denmark, based on the online survey run by the project

Social acceptance

• Average rating for the production of biogas from manure: 65.75.
• Satisfaction with a biogas plant is higher at a larger geographic scale than in immediate vicinity.
• Compensation is required if a plant is built next to their home, with a 10% discount on electricity bill being the most accepted.

Support needs

Business support needs: access to finance support, administrative support, and business modelling and planning.
Technical support needs: consultancy on the implementation and monitoring of biogas solutions, and assessment of potential biogas solutions and energy and environmental analysis.

Favourable conditions & enablers

Important factors for promoting the uptake of biogas technologies: co-digestion and public financial support schemes for biogas injected to the grid.
Favourable conditions: market and financial conditions.
Less favourable conditions: social conditions.

Barriers

Technical barriers: lack of gas infrastructure, lack of technical training/knowledge and skilled workforce.
Economic barriers: high investment costs, price volatility of substrates and biogas, and high cost of production, transportation, clean-up, and upgrading.
Institutional barriers: complex administrative and legal procedures, lack of standardization in the authorization process, and uncertain policy landscape.
Socio-cultural barriers: resistance to change, low social acceptance, lack of consumer interest, and lack of information/awareness.
Environmental side-effects: odour and noise complaints, nitrogen pollution, and impact on food security.
Barriers for women to be engaged in the biogas sector: less appealing jobs, gender role stereotypes, and lack of women in decision-making positions.

Behov for støtte
